As we celebrate progress made in independent living, community membership and equal rights of individuals with disabilities, we recognize the need for continued growth and change. Far too often policies to protect an individual contain bias and provide a foundation for paternalism. Honor for individual rights to decision-making and reasonable risks by government, support providers, and society needs to occur. Through conversation, it is our intent for participants to share stories, reflect upon their own bias and barriers, and ultimately gain tools to move forward listening with thoughtfulness, thinking creatively, and supporting people respectfully to be self-determined.. OBJECTIVES:think critically about their bias' think creatively about ways to support people use solutions that help them to support people to live the life of their choosing carry on this discussion as they return to their own communities (with ideas and language discussed in the session) hone their advocacy skills
