Transition for students in special education is not a new concept, however, finding ways to implement exemplary transition in rural settings is much more challenging. This presentation will explore innovative ways in which we have initiated transition instruction with students with moderate to severe disabilities in a rural school in the Southeastern United States. Our primary objectives in this planning process are to address student's employment, independence, community participation, and self-advocacy (Wehman, 2006). We will discuss the steps taken to implement this concept in our small town, and the evidence-based practices we draw upon. OBJECTIVES: ? This presentation will inform special educators, administrators, special education coordinators on importance of a transition program and instruction in life skills for students with disabilities ? This presentation will highlight the success of a transition program set up in a rural school. ? This presentation will show self-determination and self-competence as crucial to a student's ability to advocate for ones self and achieve desired quality of life. ? The presentation explains important principles of life within the community that will assist the collaborative team in developing transition supports focused on providing students with disabilities.
